My Family Skipped My Husband and Children’s Funeral for My Sister’s Birthday—Six Months Later, an $18.7 Million Headline Made Them Call
PART 16 — THE SECOND HEADLINE
The foundation received a major matching grant from a regional
transportation consortium.
A newspaper ran another article.
This time the headline was about a pilot fatigue-detection and
scheduling program.
My photograph appeared beneath Lily’s and Noah’s names.
Dad called the foundation office.
He told the receptionist he was my father and needed to discuss “family
governance.”
The receptionist followed policy and referred him to the executive
director.
The executive director referred the matter to counsel.
Counsel sent Dad a short letter explaining that the foundation was
independently governed and that family relationships conveyed no
authority.
Dad called me furious.
“You had a lawyer send me a letter?”
“You contacted my organization after I told you not to.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
“People using you.”
I looked at the framed photograph of Lily holding Noah’s hand.
“Dad, the people around me now ask permission before making decisions
about my life.”
Silence.
“That is what protection looks like.”
