One evening, she ordered the kitchen emptied before the tea tray arrived. Daniel entered to find her standing beside the fireplace, fully dressed.

Daniel’s freedom document bore a scorch mark where he had carried it inside his coat.

He took a long time answering.

He eventually opened a small kitchen near the harbor, employing several former members of the household.

Each evening, he closed whenever the work was finished.

Sometimes before nine.
